Let’s tell a story that doesn’t start from the beginning. We’ll start with Cheese coming to life then circle back to who actually created him and the program he stemmed from.
Backstory
Cheese’s full backstory has been posted to the Cheese Twitter account and can be found here: https://twitter.com/cheesecomputer8/status/1592724015415980033?s=46&t=-gewHwJBuQxGeAh1BUY0gQ
Backstory Thoughts
We went back and forth on where to begin the story. Initially, we were going to start from square one and give people all the answers up front to not leave any holes.
We really liked this conventional approach, however, we decided the CheeseComputer concept is anything but conventional. So ultimately, we went with a different route.
We would begin the story from the point in which Cheese comes to life, without fully explaining the reasoning behind his creation or his obsession with puns. Then, have the audience follow him on his journey of creating the perfect pun.
In the end of his journey, we’ll bring it back to what happened before Cheese became Cheese and tie everything together.
Why a Story?
You can’t just have a mouse connected to a computer made of cheese and not explain why.
A story was the best way for us to tie in a multiple-collection project.
Though the focus of this project is on one character, there are many puns we wanted to share with each one catered to a slightly different audience.
We want to create a variety of NFT collections with the intent of attracting a variety of people.
We want to have people from all walks of web3 joining the CheeseComputer community. New people entering the space, artists, seasoned developers, educators, new developers, content creators, storytellers, music producers, business managers, community managers, discord experts, and people who just want to learn are all welcomed.
We believe to have a fully functional community it needs to have diversity in skillset, and the best way to bring that diversity together is through a story.
Cheese’s First Words
In the story, after Cheese takes a moment to realize he’s alive, he exclaims, “I must create the perfect pun!”
Initially, we thought this would be a bit rushed or random to have this as his first words. He was an inanimate object just a few seconds before, and now he’s alive and all of the sudden has this unexpectedly strong conviction.
But, the reason we wanted this to be his first words is actually for that reason exactly. We wanted to show conviction.
From the start we want potential community members to know where we stand and what our goals are with this project. So, it made sense for us to have a main character with that same strong conviction from the start.
Why is His Name Cheese?
This is a great question that was actually purposely not addressed in the backstory. The first pun he thinks of begins with the word “Cheese” (“Cheese the day”) but, there isn’t actually any acknowledgement yet of this being his name.
Later on in his journey when he meets some other characters, there will be some back and forth banter and “Cheese” will be the name he decides on.
What Can We Expect from this Story?
Expect a fun ride. Cheese will travel to the safari, Antarctica, NASA, Venice Beach, and a few other places. Each location he goes to he’ll get inspiration from his surroundings and use it to create a new pun.
This story will also feature characters that are people from Twitter who actively engage with Cheese, and some whom we have reached out to to be a part of this story.
The story is already set, we can publish it without the characters from Twitter. However, to show appreciation and to make the Twitter community part of this journey, we decided to include some familiar characters.
Is there a Message behind this story?
“On the surface, Cheese is just corny jokes and play on words, but on a deeper level it’s much more than that. Cheese is about creativity, originality, and innovation. It’s about finding your passion and running with it.” — Ned, Founder
Every story has a message. We don’t want to blatantly state the message in the story, but there’s a recurring theme of manifestation and creativity.
Anything Cheese can draw is instantly created through the cheese computer. As long as he can visualize it, he can create it.
